DRM Authority Hands Over Firefighting Equipment and Conducts Training in Bimini

The DRM Authority continues its work of creating more resilient communities throughout The Bahamas.

Minister the Hon. McKell Bonaby, Executive Chair Alex Storr, and Managing Director Aarone Sargent, presented officials in Bimini, including Member of Parliament for Bimini Randy Rolle and Island Administrator Eva K. Arthur, with equipment to enhance the community’s firefighting capabilities.

Included in the handover was a firefighting all-terrain vehicle, which could be rapidly deployed in an emergency, and a water storage and pumping vehicle, which would allow residents to quickly extinguish fires. The equipment was presented during a brief handover ceremony on Monday, July 20th.

To build firefighting capacity on-island, DRM Authority staff, including Senior Disaster Operations Officer Tyrone Brown, are conducting a truncated training course on operation and maintenance for the vehicles for local emergency responders. The training will run for the remainder of the week.

Managing Director Aarone Sargent emphasised that training and equipping communities throughout The Bahamas is a significant part of the DRM Authority’s mission, saying, “The DRM Authority is working every day to build more resilient, self-sustainable communities that can respond rapidly and decisively to disasters. We plan on deploying firefighting assets like this on every island in The Bahamas.”

Through assistance with equipment and essential training, the DRM Authority demonstrates its commitment to building local capacity and resilience. These initiatives strengthen emergency response on Bimini and serve as a model for disaster preparedness across The Bahamas. As the DRM Authority continues its work, communities throughout the islands can look forward to greater safety and self-reliance.
