The Partnership Will Use Cutting Edge Tech to Monitor Natural Disasters 

Miami, USA. The Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Authority is working with regional partners to enhance The Bahamas’s disaster readiness and save lives.  

A delegation of DRM  Authority leadership, consisting of Minister with Responsibility for Disaster Risk Management the Hon. Leon Lundy, Director Ralph Hanna, Executive Chairman Alex Storr, Managing Director Aarone Sargent, Assistant Director for Strategic Communications Taige Adderley, and Disaster Operations Manager Cleavon Nixon, recently toured the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Coral Gables, Florida, to learn about the NHC’s weather monitoring and operations.  

The tour, facilitated by US Northern Command (NORTHCOM), was conducted by NHC Deputy Director Jaimie Rhome, who gave an overview of the NHC’s cutting-edge weather mapping and predictive modelling capabilities utilising state of the art satellite and infrared imaging and precise computations to predict storm paths, flood zones and other critical pieces  information.   

The tour concluded with the NHC agreeing to share crucial weather data with The Bahamas, enabling local weather services access to pinpoint accurate weather information allowing them to take decisive action and save lives.  

Natural and man-made disasters do not recognise borders. The DRM Authority will continue to collaborate with international partners, like the NHC, to build capacity to anticipate, mitigate, and respond to disasters and protect The Bahamas.
