In 2009, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) declared October 13th the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR). The aim of this observance day is to promote a worldwide culture of risk awareness, disaster reduction, and preparedness.
According to the United Nations, roughly 100 million people worldwide were affected by disasters every year between 2016 and 2025. The Bahamas is among the most vulnerable nations, with our low-lying islands situated in the heart of “Hurricane Alley.” In 2019 alone, Hurricane Dorian caused $3.4 billion in damage, took an estimated 350 precious lives, and left 29,000 Bahamians with damaged or destroyed homes. This year’s UN Day for Disaster Reduction theme, “Resilience Starts At Home,” is a powerful reminder for every Bahamian: we must all take steps now to make our homes safer and more resilient.
“Resilience Starts At Home” is more than a Theme
The Disaster Risk Management Authority continually emphasizes that disaster preparedness begins at home. Resilience isn’t a luxury—it’s a right. Here are immediate steps you can take to protect your household:
Purchase home or renter’s insurance if available or affordable
Protect your home and belongings against disaster losses
Learn your area’s warning systems
The Bahamas uses the MARCO Alert system and the DRM Authority’s social media pages. Understanding the warning system in your area can give you precious time to protect your home and family.
Keep Your Household Prepared
Stock emergency supplies: first-aid kit, non-perishable food, water, and packed bags. Secure important documents (passports, birth certificates, deeds). Keep cash in small denominations. Identify your nearest shelter and plan your route in advance.
Rely on credible news sources
Get updates from official government sources or credentialed media. Make sure all household members have accurate information.
Preparedness at home saves money—and, more importantly, saves lives. Every Bahamian deserves a safe place to live. For resources to make your home safer, visit www.getready.gov.bs. To learn more about the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, go to https://iddrr.undrr.org/.
