We are strongly committed to strengthening national disaster management efforts in the Bahamas.
In the face of stronger and more frequent climate-driven hazards, The Government of The Bahamas is committed to strengthening national disaster management efforts and building a system that is comprehensive, proactive and constantly upgrading to meet these new challenges. Driving this evolution is the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Authority – the nation’s official agency responsible for the development and implementation of disaster policy, planning, and management.
Established by the Disaster Risk Management Act of 2022, the DRM Authority was formed through the merger of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA). The Authority unites the expertise and functions of its predecessors and expands their mandate to include all stages of the disaster management cycle: mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery.
Guided by a fundamental belief in the sanctity of life, the strength of our people, and the promise of The Bahamian future, The DRM Authority is committed to empowering every person, community, and island in The Bahamas to feel secure in the face of natural hazards.

Comprehensive and Inclusive Disaster Management:
All of the Disaster Cycle
Our approach addresses all stages of disaster management—Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery—and marks a shift from previous models that prioritized preparation and response.
All of The Bahamas
We embrace a whole-of-country and whole-of-community strategy, integrating the efforts of our Family Islands, government agencies, private sectors, and non-profits. This inclusivity ensures every community in The Bahamas’ unique needs are addressed.
Preventing Loss, Protecting Futures
Proactivity defines our work. By focusing on mitigation and preventative action, we aim to reduce risk and safeguard lives. Strategic planning is central to this, allowing us to introduce long-term solutions, pre-empt challenges, and harness resources to lessen the impact of hazards long before they threaten our shores.
Independent Authority, Stronger Communities
Empowerment is at the heart of our approach, and we seek to introduce it at every level. The autonomy of being a quasi-governmental agency not only empowers us with the agility to act decisively but also enables us to be more flexible in how we seek and allocate resources, reducing our reliance on government funding and enabling innovative solution-building.
This dedication to independence also drives our commitment to equip Family Islands to build local capacity to respond to hazards. The core of it all is community empowerment—furnishing Bahamians with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to be integral parts of disaster management and to protect their homes, families, and neighbourhoods.
Smart Solutions for a Safer Bahamas
Through innovation, we enhance disaster management for all Bahamians. By integrating leading technology and data-driven decision-making, we optimize hazard monitoring, early warning systems, and emergency responses. We focus not only on smarter resource allocation and faster outcomes but also on building the capacity of our people—investing in training and development to ensure that the best and brightest are leading the way. By continually seeking better solutions, we are shaping a future where disasters are met with preparedness, precision, and the collective strength of the nation.
